October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October cancer awareness month
October is breast cancer awareness month. In a recent article (Link), Dr. David Samadi discusses the staggering number of more than 230,000 women affected by breast cancer each year. In the United States alone breast cancer kills more women than every other cancer with the exception of lung cancer. Breast cancer awareness is of the utmost importance because early screening and detection is essential to increase survival odds.

What is particularly interesting about this article are the key statistics and risk factors related to breast cancer. Approximately 85% of of the women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. Your risk is also almost doubled if you have a first degree relative (sister or mother) who has been diagnosed.  This means that this increased risk is due to either genetic mutations or its heredity. These findings mean that everyone is at risk, and early detection and treatment are the key to beating the illness.

The good news is that modern medicine has evolved to provide effective treatments and a breast cancer diagnosis is rarely going to be a death sentence.  The current 5 year survival rate in the United States is up to 90% of all those diagnosed. Unfortunately, the road to recovery can be emotionally, physically and financially draining.  We can help you through those tough financial times, making it that much easier to fight for your survival.
